Recycle
Your Obsolete Electronics
E-waste is the fastest growing source of waste, growing three times faster than regular waste. There are an estimated 9.2 million computers in use around Australia. It is expected that over this year a further 2.1 million computers will enter the market, while 3 million will reach the end of their life. Presently only 3% of e-waste is recycled.
Landfilling e-waste is hazardous to the environment and human health because substances such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and nickel can leach out into the ground and water. These substances have been associated with diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders.
Our local e-waste isn’t just accumulating in our landfills, but is often shipped oversees to countries such as China, Nigeria and Indonesia, where it threatens the health of these communities. Find out more at the Basel Action Network (BAN) website - working to prevent the export of toxic wastes, toxic products and toxic technologies from rich to poorer countries.
Individual items can be dropped off at our Green Collective retail stores, charged at $10 per item for computer decks, laptops, printers, scanners, faxes; and $15 per item for CRT monitors and televisions.
